HART MAGNET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Hart School on Adams Avenue is a magnet school meaning some of its students come from the entire district by lottery, others come from designated neighborhoods. Hart focuses on technology and enhanced science instruction. These benefits are in addition to normal core academics and extras such as art, music and physical education. The technology instruction is given in a computer lab. It covers keyboarding, word processing, research skills and multimedia integration. It is project based and “closely mirrors classroom instruction.” The science component is given in a science lab and is “a hands-on, inquiry based program where students learn concepts through active involvement.” Three specialty teachers, two in sciences and one in technology, are extra staff in place to provide this instruction. Twice during the school year a week of mini-courses are offered. This provides a change of pace, and gives children an opportunity to explore intensely an area of interest. A wide variety of titles are available by grade level. Examples are: “Ocean Animals”, “Seeds, Seeds”, “Solar System”, “Kitchen Chemistry”, “Sudoku” and “Musical Madness.” Mini-courses also allow students to get a sample of different teachers and meet students from other classrooms. Normal classes resume the following week. This school benefits from a supportive P.T.O. group. Funds are raised and donated for field trips and cultural events. Currently Hart has 423 students taught by a dedicated staff of 24 professional classroom teachers, 17 specialty teachers and 15 teacher’s assistants. There are 6 support staff and 2 administrators. There are 69 students expected to graduate in June. It is expected 140 new students will be chosen by lottery and join the school for the next year.
